Cold and gusty
Forecast: 10 to 12 degrees, south wind up to 26 knots. South is always gusty.
On arrival only 6 degrees.
Jurjen and Jeroen were already there. Jurjen had taken his smallest sail 6.8. That was too big in the gusts. Jeroen had rigged 4.7 and could plane with it in the gusts, but stood still a lot. Difficult to choose. rather size larger than too small.
Banzai 6.0 with FSW 102 and MFC 29cm
From the small bay to the corner between the wind vane and the harbor.
Chop, gusty wind, so a bit of downwind to get into plane and then trying to get upwind was much as possible.
This didn't really work: time for a bigger fin. Also needed to warm up my hands. Even with gloves all the way on, still cold fingers.
Banzai 6.0 with FSW 102 and MFC 32cm
With the 32cm clearly better. A little easier to plane, easier to get upwind, therefore more room for jibing: width and planing.
Sometimes the gusts were very strong: sail very large. Other moments really just enough wind, some pumps needed to get planing.
There was low chaos chop. It didn't really bother me. But you couldn't really use it for jumping.
It was too cold. Wind was, as to be expected, gusty, normally not nice, but when it is also this cold: had better sessions.
At departure it was still 8 degrees, certainly not the predicted 10 to 12 degrees.

Best set for the conditions. Could almost always plane. Many planing best in the flat water in the corner near the harbor. Few good waves to jump. |
