Cold sunny winter session
Fast increasing wind predicted, 8 degrees and sun.
On arrival it was a clear blue sky and it really only just started to blow.
With the predicted, rapidly increasing wind, it is difficult to choose which sail to rig.

Banzai 5.3 with JP FSW 102 and Makani 26cm
Chosen the 5.3 on minimum trim. If it was too small in the beginning, I could always wait until the wind was enough or rig a larger sail.
To be sure, took the 26cm fin, in case the wind was too strong. Rigger the sail with minimum trim and upper outhaul eye. First meters bit minimal, after that it was good.
I always had to try to get upwind, wind turned a lot. The 26cm is actually too small for the 5.3 with minimal wind. Wind did increase, more trim in the sail, but with the turning wind, a longer fin is finer. Water was very flat, so a lot of very long runs, nice cruising. A lot of planing jibes. Even if they didn't go perfectly, I could often end them planing.

Banzai 5.3 with JP FSW 102 and Freewave 29cm
With the 29cm clearly better, I should have started with that. Board ran much better upwind. That Makani is more fun when you can do some waveriding. But for long runs on almost flat water, the Freewave 29cm is clearly better. Wind, as predicted, increased more and more. Sail had to be trimmed more and more. Wind also became more gusty. Sometimes everyone stood still and other times you saw surfers crashing everywhere. Never crashed myself. Always had enough control, but the gusts were really extreme at times. During trimming the sail I noticed that the baseplate was loose, very loose! Half a centimeter of clearance: I got really lucky, could easily have lost the sail. In the end I really couldn't close the sail in the gusts. 4.2 would have been a lot better, and in the gusts maybe even 3.7 was possible.

It was only 7 degrees, colder than I normally take as a lower limit. All day clear blue sky, and with the sun it was still doable.
Good choice in terms of equipment, if the wind is going to increase this quickly, there is a good chance that you will keep rigging sails.

Kabbelaarsbank

Present: Jeroen

12:30 0.5 hour Wind: S/SW 18/25 kts
Board: JP Freestyle Wave 102 Pro - Makani Kaku 26cm
Sail: Goya Banzai Pro 5.3 - Goya Eightyfive Pro 400 - AL360 E3 Carbon 160-220
Wind was gusty and shifting all the time. Sail and board were good, fin didn't get upwind good enough.
I had to consciously try to get upwind all the time. Normally I would take the MFC Freewave 29cm on flat water.
13:00 2 hour Wind: S/SW 20/32 kts
Board: JP Freestyle Wave 102 Pro - MFC Freewave 29cm
Sail: Goya Banzai Pro 5.3 - Goya Eightyfive Pro 400 - AL360 E3 Carbon 160-220
Set worked well, ran nice and loose and good upwind. Water was very flat, even for Kabbelaarsbank. Wind was gusty and shifty. I could always plane. Wind slowly increased. Last half hour sail was trimmed over max and still it was hard work in the gusts, but never overpowered. If I could find a steep wave it was easy to jump. Easily made almost all my jibes planing.
