2nd storm in March
Today more wind predicted than yesterday. Yesterday 4.2, so today the 3.7 should be needed. Upon arrival, the wind didn't seem so strong. I had made the wrong choice a few weeks ago. So this time rigged the 3.7, but with the top outhaul. Good day to test the Goya 81 against the AHD.
Banzai 3.7 on the Custom3 81 with 19/10 fins
3.7 was a good choice. Only sometimes I could not get planing quickly. Even near to the beach, I often got away easily. Only a few really beautiful waves. Especially a lot of difficult chop, especially in the gusts it was heavy on the knees. Could often still make a back-side hits.
Banzai 3.7 on the AHD 253 with 22cm fin
Amazing: what a control. I left the beach with Gert-Jan and Henk Slaa and could go full out, no holding back and keep up with them, Henk didn't even gain anyhting on me. Until the jibing. I stopped planing, sank immediately. Took a while to get planing again. Back to the beach focus on waveriding. No matter how small the board is, because I know the board very well, waveriding is really fun. Little effort to get the board to turn. Until you don't do it perfectly, immediately stop planing and the board sinks. Jumping is also fun with this board.
I really notice the difference: control, so much less tiring.
No more paying attention to every chop, either absorbing it or even avoid it. You focus on the waves and the chop in between doesn't do much. Until you start jibing. If you do anything wrong, you stand still, and you sink.
Banzai 3.7 on the Custom3 81 with 19/10 fins
The Goya 81 just sails easier, because of the width and more volume, makes things easier. Only in the tricky chop does the AHD clearly have more control. Wind had changed a direction a bit, so I could jump either way. Once landed very flat, I was higher than I expected. Waves also seemed to get a little better. Could really do a few back-side hits in a row at times.
The Chop was tricky, hardly any sun. Not really very cold either: cap, but no mittens.
It was wonderful to sail in a storm again. Good test of the 2 high-wind waveboards. That AHD remains a level apart.
It was fun with many friends on the water..
Also went to look at 3 seals were released again, always nice to see.

Upper eyelet, further medium trim. Set worked well. Sail never really too big. Sometimes a wind hole, then could not get planing. Water was rough, so sometimes more difficult to sail. Jumping went well, gybing pretty well. Back-side waveriding went was good. I don't think I've found the best trim for this kind of raw water yet. Board still seems to be bouncing a bit too much. Next time try other fins, play a bit with the mast foot and boom height. |

Smooth! Bizar, you think that the Goya Thruster 81 gives a lot of control and smooth sailing. But this is way more smooth. With the AHD I can almost sail with my eyes closed. With the Goya I am constantly watching out for chop so that I can anticipate it. The AHD just smooths it out, the Goya bounces over it. The Goya is not very bad, still control. It's just harder work, heavier on your knees. But yes, 74 liters and only 52cm wide. A bad jibe, bad wave riding or a wind dip... the board sinks. |

Was the water a bit more flat, the sailing was easy, sometimes chaos chop and then a bit more difficult. Wind had turned a little more, so jumping was now going well with right foot in front, my side. Back-side wave riding went well, short but sometimes also wide turn. Few attempts front-side, unfortunately not really succeeded, wind was too on-shore. But I do notice that I can sail switch stance with this board quite well. Wind range of the Banzai was needed again, very nice that the range is so large. |
