Edge of storm Bert: Bertje
Storm Bert predicted: 30 to 48 knots, SSW, but dry and very warm for time of year, nice weather for 3.7 or 4.2.
Doubted between Kabbelaarsbank and Blokkendam, with SSW Blokkendam is not ideal, often the wind does not come through.
Once at the Brouwersdam, the wind was quite disappointing, so chose to start with 4.7.
Banzai 4.7 on the Grip 9.3 with MFC 21/11cm thruster fins
Low tide and south wind, so a long walk to have free wind, the Blokkendam then blocks a lot of wind. First bobbing a bit and then clean free wind and planing. Further out, the wind only got stronger and it was hands full. Sailing out square straight against the waves, so nice jumping. Back towards the beach easy to get upwind by trying to follow the waves. And if there was a somewhat higher breaking wave, nice for front-side wave riding. Unfortunately, the waves were very close together, so little room to move and no possibility to really make a big bottom turn.
Unfortunately, the wind dropped quickly and the best was gone after the first half hour. Slowly less and less trim in the 4.7. Actually, I should have taken my 5.3 a long time ago. At the end I could only plane towards the beach, by using the waves to get into plane. Going out it was no longer possible to plane.
With 16 degrees it was nice and warm, a little bit of sun. Because of that the water felt very fresh.
The first half hour was very nice, unfortunately storm Bert was quite disappointing.

Medium trim in the beginning. Set worked well, almost sideshore wind, no high waves, but quite nice font-side wave riding. Jumping was quite fun. Wind decreased, eventually sailed with minimum trim, even below it. Waves almost gone. In the beginning in the strong wind, good control, no spinouts and good upwind. At the end with minimum trim I could still sail cross wind and plane relatively early. Range of the Banzai was again impressive. |
